Editing is the process of selecting and preparing written, visul, audible and film media used to convey information. The editing process can involve correction, condensation, organization, and other modifications performed with an intention of producing a correct, consistent, accurate and complete work - Wiki answer - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Editing

Types of editing

  • STRAIGHT CUT designed to be invisible so that shots join together without being noticeable creates REALISM
  • FADE IN/FADE OUT screens fades to black/white into or out of a shot
  • DISSOLVE where one image is slowly brought in beneath another one
  • WIPE CUT where one part of the screen moves to wipe across the other
  • JUMP CUT where the audiences attention is brought into focus on something very suddenly

  • CONTINUITY EDITING editing designed to be invisible to create realism
  • MONTAGE EDITING - is when narrative information is presented in a condensed fashion in a short segment

  • CROSS-CUTTING used to establish continuity - the camera will cut away from one action to another action. Because the shots occur one after another, cross-cutting is used to suggest simultaneity of action (ie the actions are happening at the same time)

  • MATCH ON ACTION - a cut that connects two (or more) different views of the same action at the same moment in the movement - by carefully matching the movement across the two (or more) shots, filmmakers make it seem that the motion continues uninterrupted.
